Statement on the passing of Fred Smith
It’s with a heavy heart that we acknowledge the passing of Fred Smith, founder of FedEx. As the visionary who transformed the delivery industry and pioneered overnight shipping, Fred had a global impact. But we’ll remember him best for the profound and transformative effect he had on Memphis.
Fred was more than a businessman; he was the architect who transformed Memphis into a global logistics powerhouse and in the process, created modern global commerce. As FedEx grew from a revolutionary idea by a college student to become one of the biggest companies in the world, Fred’s commitment to Memphis stayed strong – even as other cities wooed the company. His leadership created tens of thousands of jobs and brought prosperity to thousands of Memphians. He instilled the company with an ethos of service and commitment to community.
Beyond FedEx, Fred was deeply committed to Memphis. He was a quiet but forceful driver behind countless civic projects that made Memphis a better place for all its people. From the University of Memphis and the Memphis Zoo to FedExForum, the Grizzlies and the National Civil Rights Museum, his civic leadership and generosity has touched each corner of Memphis.
Fred was a remarkable man. A trailblazer who saw possibilities where others saw obstacles and a true believer in Memphis. We’re grateful for Fred’s friendship and for everything that he has given to our community. We will miss him terribly.
