Public meeting set on Triangle Noir project

The Commercial Appeal -

The City of Memphis Division of Housing and Community Development will host a public meeting from 4 to 7 p.m. on Jan. 30 to discuss best usage concepts for the 20-block Triangle Noir Redevelopment Project area.

The event will be held at Bridges, 477 North Fifth.

Organizers believe the area has the potential to become a major tourist attraction devoted to African-American history and culture, including music, arts and civil rights.

The Triangle Noir Project will include historic properties in the area, such as the National Civil Rights Museum, WLOK radio station, Tri-State Bank and Clayborn Temple. The goal is to make the area financially sustainable and a major tourism destination.

Geographic boundaries are Riverside Drive on the west, Crump Street on the south, East Street on the east and Washington Avenue on the north.

"The residents, businesses and communities included in the project area are integral to this city and its overall well-being," said Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. "As we continue to develop it into a vibrant and thriving tourist destination, visitors will be better able to experience the unique spirit and soul of Memphis."

Self + Tucker Architects and The Carter Malone Group are coordinating the meeting. For more information, contact Deidre Malone at (901) 278-0881.
