The Memphis Zoo welcomed a new baby into the world this week, but this infant is anything but little.
“Wendy,” a reticulated giraffe, was born around 6:30 Monday evening. She’ll be between 15 and 17 feet tall and weigh more than a ton once she’s fully grown.
“Wendy” is the fifth baby giraffe born at the zoo in as many years. She was named after one of the zookeepers who helped deliver her.
“This time is crucial as the bond is formed between the calf and its mother,” says Matt Thompson, the zoo’s director of animal programs. “We anticipate that visitors will be able to see both mom and baby on exhibit within the next few days.”
Right now the young giraffe will spend some time outside, but because of the extreme heat, will also have access to a cooler, indoor enclosure.
