A federal transportation enhancement grant administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation will mean $1.64 million to build 4.73 miles of trail for cyclists, horse riders and pedestrians in Shelby Farms.
The money will go toward constructing much of the initial trail system within Shelby Farms, connecting it to residential areas and other greenways, such as the Shelby Farms Greenline and the Wolf River Greenway.
“We’re so excited,” Laura Adams, executive director of Shelby Farms Park Conservancy, said. “This is extremely consistent with our long-range vision of connecting our park and the neighborhoods north, west, south and east of the park.”
The trails for cyclists and pedestrians will be 13 feet wide and paved while the equestrian trails will be 10 feet wide and unpaved.
“This project will increase opportunities for recreational activities in Shelby Farms, while decreasing vehicle traffic inside the park,” Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen said in a statement.
This grant was one of 34 statewide totaling $18.5 million in transportation funding.
"The enhancement grant program provides an opportunity for the state to work with local agencies to fund projects that enrich Tennessee communities in a variety of ways," Bredesen said. "Many will use these funds to build new sidewalks and bike trails that support healthier lifestyles, while others utilize the program to save historic structures for future generations. All of these are worthwhile projects that truly enhance the quality of life in local communities."
Shelby Farms currently has more than 15 miles of trails.
