Charter school vets open Omni Schools

Partners to develop network, unified business model

Memphis Business Journal - by Michael Sheffield

After finding success with the Soulsville Charter School, Marc Willis and Cary Booker are hoping to bring a new model to local charter schools with the opening of two in the Raleigh-Frayser area.

The typical charter school model has been to launch a school that would grow by grade level as students are promoted every year. Omni Schools, the parent company of Omni Prep Academy-North Pointe Lower School and Omni Prep Academy-Northpointe Middle School, is launching this fall with 320 total students in kindergarten, 1st, 5th and 6th grades.

The goal, Willis says, is to create a network of charter schools that would have a unified business model and central source of funding.

Omni Schools has received more than $375,000 in grants from educational foundations including The Hyde Family Foundations. The schools will open this fall inside the education building at Holy Nations Church on Old Brownsville Road while Willis and Booker seek a permanent facility.
